This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
