Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty
The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
