EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
